Out and About
So you’ve reached the Highlands - now what to do? Firstly head for the North: we are just 20 minutes' drive North of Inverness from where you can explore. Furthermore the North of Scotland is where some of the finest scenery, walking, golf courses, whisky distilleries and more are to be found. In this page we will attempt to offer a few suggestions.
Whisky Distilleries (Could we start any other way?!)
We consider ourselves very fortunate to have the Dalmore Distillery virtually on our doorstep. Under the wing of Whyte & Macka, the Dalmore (Est 1839) sits on the banks of the picturesque Cromarty Firth. The Dalmore offers superb free tours every hour during the season and at the end you will get a chance to flavour the delights!
Just down the road is the Glen Ord distillery, which has had many award winning single malt whiskies, again with an exhibition centre and regular tours. There is a small fee to have a tour.
You won't need us to tell you that there are a lot of distilleries to be found in Scotland, so visit and enjoy!!
Golf
Before we moved to Scotland we had no idea how much golf there would be up here, how pleasantly surprised I was! Here in our own town we enjoy an 18 hole par 67 inland course, not long but challenging all the same. As with every golf course I’ve played in Scotland it offers some fabulous scenery. The 19th was erected in the year 2000 and offers a warm and friendly environment.
Other courses close by are Invergordon, Tain & Tarbat and a little further afield are Fortrose & Rosemarkie, Lochcarron, Muir Of Ord, Strathpeffer and Ullapool.
Lots of information on all of these golf courses can be found at www.golfhighland.com
Or call us and we can post you a brochure (which also gets you 10% discount on all fees!!)
Check the Golf.UK.NET website to visit many golf clubs around Scotland and help plan your journey.
Walking
Of course, people come in their droves to Scotland to experience some of the best walks and passageways in the world, blown away by the spectacular scenery and views that only a few are privileged to see.
Everyone’s ability is different, so we suggest you visit the activity pages on visitscotland.com where you’ll find some great ideas on where to walk. One thing for sure, we are ideally situated to head off in different directions -establish your base here where we can dry out your boots and clothing (if required).
Visitors to our site might be wondering what the monument is either side of our sketched drawing at the top of this page. It is known as the "Fyrish Monument" which is visible from this hotel at the top of a high hill (Fyrish Hill. This Indian style monument was constructed by an Indian Army Genera, Sir Hector Munro (1728 - 1805). When work was in decline in the area he instructed its construction to ensure employment and to keep local craftsmen. Today it is considered a tribute to this 18th century benefactor. To visit this also makes a pleasant walk; from parking the car it is about 2 miles.
Self Drive
And what better way to see Scotland? At the end of our driveway you can turn left or right and which ever way you go the drive the options will be limitless.Taking the left option will take you through the town to join the A9 and head North for Tain, Dornoch or even Wick, Thurso & John O Groats.
If you turn right at the end of our drive you may well find yourself heading towards Bonar Bridge, Invershin or even enjoying the drive to Ullapool.
By giving yourself most of the day you will enjoy the drive all the way around the coastline (via Cape Wrath) of Scotland, we’ve done it and it is superb.
At Invershin near Lairg there is the “Falls Of Shin” to enjoy, where you can see Salmon leaping up over the waterfalls, and enjoy refreshments at the well-equipped visitor centre.
